answers 0:i need to know the steps to cut a embelicol cord because i have a dog and its in labor and i need to know how to cut the umbelicol cord soon!answers 1:Just to say what others have written is all good - mum should do the job herself but just be there to get in if there's a problem. Some mums tend to nip them too short which can cause hernias but if she's doing a good job, fine. I know some breeders do prefer to do this themselves however - tearing is better than cutting as it's less likely to bleed badly. Hopefully mum has a 'correct bite' as if she's over or undershot, she may not be able to deal with this as efficiently as she should (good reason for having a dog with a correct scissor bite incidentally!)...answers 2:you don't need too, the ***** will do this herself. Just try to stay out of her way, only ! intervene if there is a problem, and then bring them all to the vet straight away, as you can do more harm than good if you don't know what you are doing. -Nebanswers 3:Personally, I like to either allow the b*tch to do it herself or to simply "shred" it with my fingernails about an inch from the abdomen. Shredding it makes it less likely to bleed and you want to leave enough of the cord so that you can tie it off with some dental floss if necessary. Do not be in too much of a hurry to get it detached-- it is FAR more important to make sure the pup is out of the sack and is breathing well than it is to get the placenta detached!!...answers 4:heres a site to check out. good luckanswers 5:The mom will chew the cords and clean the pups. She will also eat the afterbirth. This is all normal. Don't interfere ,take them to the vet!!answers 6:Keep in mind that a puppy is not born like a human. They will be in semi-transparent fluid filled sacs when they come out that will need t! o be busted open. Normally the female will remove the puppy f! rom the sac, and then chew the cord off of the puppy. When she starts having puppies, the best case scenario is you sitting back watching. However, some females do not do this, so after she has a pup, if after 30 secs to a minute she does not tear the sac, do it for her. It is not a complex maneuver, simply grab the sac with your fingers and tear it open. The puppies lungs will be full of fluid and will need to be cleared. A very easy and effective method is to firmly hold the entire length of the puppy sandwiched between your hands (belly down on one of your palms) with the tip of its nose/mouth at your finger tips and its butt at your wrist. Swing the puppies head from chest height towards the floor in an arcing motion, while retaining full control and support of its body. Do not allow the head to move while doing this, or you could injure the pup. There is no technique to cutting the umbilical cord. Some people use string, some people use nail clips, some people ju! st use a pair of scissors. They don't bleed a alot with a puppy, so it's really a non issue. Like I said before, if the mother will chew them off, just let her do her thing.Just towel them off, and place them on a nipple. If you have a weak puppy or a "gasper" (puppy is laboring for breath) after clearing their lungs, put a drop of honey (or syrup) on their tongue. The sugar rush can sometimes give them enough of a boost to start nursing.Good luck!P.S. If the mother wants to eat the afterbirths, let her. It is not one of the more pleasant things to watch, but it can get her hormones going and her milk flowing. Don't force them on her, but don't take them away if she wants to eat them....
