Travis Colomb: alot its minor things along with major things.being legal means that your car complies with all the safety standards and lighting standards such as brakes lights and what not. what can also not make your car legal is not passing smog inspection and then you dont get a sticker to say that you passed and hence you can not legally drive your vehicle on the road

Corrina Faro: well other than the obvious (tags registration ect...)there are things like your horse power over 600 somthing HP is illegal to drive on the street.then other little things like lighting (must have turn signals headlamps brake lamps ect.... but must not have certain color lights expecaly red or blue are big no no's because you might be confused for a cop or a fire truck or an abulance. and pretty much the only other thing is ur exaust is supposed to be in working order with a catalithic converter and mufflerso if you want a street illegal ! car what you need to do is git a old police intercepter or what ever you like remove all insurance licence plates ect.. find a bigblock invest around 7000 dollars into building the motor with every thing from a super charger nos kit and what ever else you fancy to beef up your powermake sure you run true straitpipes on headers for that ear shattering sound that nobody can ignoreto top it off add some blue underbody lights and a coulple red/blue strobes to runu will have a huge tickit and an impounded car in no time good luck...Show more

The federal government has laws, rules & mandates that it requires manufacturers & importers to meet before a car can be sold in the U.S. Those cover things like safety & pollution levels, seat belts, brake lights, etc. Then, any state can make laws that require compliance before you can get a license plate. These laws cannot directly violate any federal laws, tho. THEN, cities & counties can have their own list of stuff on top of that. Those laws are like tighter pollution levels, maybe noise levels, & their laws can't violate any state or federal laws.
