How many tons do U-Boats weigh?

Dwight Siniard: The most common German U-Boat (Type VII) displaced 871 tons submerged. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Type_VII_subma...By comparison, the Gato-Class US Naval Submarine displaced 2424 tons submerged. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gato_class_submarine

Ronnie Barcus: 1545 tons. that's an IXC type. fully loaded.

Cletus Makler: This is a great link as different classes were different weights.

Mikel Bethay: Best to look up the links that Garry and H-man have cited. There were many variations. The American U-boats were generally larger than the German ones. And the Japanese built the largest ones. Remember too, the weight is not the actual wieght of the vessel, but it's displacement weight. Say you put a U-boat under water, and then removed it and somehow a bubble remained the exact shape of the U-boat. A 770 ton U-boat technically means it would take 770 tons of water to fill that bubble....Show more

Dick Maisenbacher: The tonnage o! f a ship or submarine does not refer to how much it weighs it refers to the amount of water it displaces. The others have given you the displacement of U-Boats so between us you have your answer.

Heidi Creselious: 2100 to 6500 tons displacement.

Leif Serabia: There were 5 classes of U-boat, each weighing differently to the other classes. These were : 1) Sea-going submarines of 500 to 700 tons2) Ocean-going submarines of 1,000 tons3) U-cruisers of 1,500 tons4) Coastal submarines of 250 tons to 500 tons 5) Mine laying submarines of 250 to 500 tonsDesigns that included U-boats that carried two E-boats or planes were dropped. For more info see:http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/u-boats.htmhttp://www.uboat.net/index.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-boat#World_War_IIHope this helps....Show more
