Mikel Bethay: Best to look up the links that Garry and H-man have cited. There were many variations. The American U-boats were generally larger than the German ones. And the Japanese built the largest ones. Remember too, the weight is not the actual wieght of the vessel, but it's displacement weight. Say you put a U-boat under water, and then removed it and somehow a bubble remained the exact shape of the U-boat.
