Oscar Wieland: Your installer is being lazy. If you can get all the channels fine with the receiver you have now, you can use a DVR fine. You just need a second coax installed.Anyhow, TiVo works like most DVRs, except your box has A/V in to record from a set-top-box (or can accept some set-top -boxes on CH 2,3,or 4), and IR blasters to control the box pretending to be its remote control, or can record from analog antenna or cable, so it can use its guide to automatically record.You need to subscribe to the TiVo service for most TiVo models.
