What is the Difference between Humanities and Social Studies?

answers1: Thank you for all the answers
answers2: Geography is part of the social sciences/social studies.
Humanities as a "major" will include art and music (at least
historical development) as full-fledged areas.
Read your school's materials closely and you should be able to see the
way to go. You can also consult on this with your advisor/counselor.

Why is "History" lumped in with "Humanities"?

answers1: It is in the humanities because so much of it is based on
opinion, hearsay and bias. It's not empirical, its not quantitative
per se (even though you can treat some historical data in a
quantitative manner) it's much more qualitative.

Oh, and because the "father of history", Herodotus, is also known as
the "father of lies".

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE history, but you have to recognise that it
can't be categorised in the same way as physics, biology or even
physical geography.

BTW, IMHO Human geography SHOULD be in with the humanities too....

Conceptual art debate?

Conceptual art is sometimes considered to be a reaction against
Greenberg's writings on Formalism. I would consider Marcel Duchamp to

Art school?

answers1: If I had to go back to a decision on one, i imagine i might
want to pass with... ugh! i might want to ought to assert Med college.
in case you've been easily searching for a career appropriate to both,
you may want to develop right into a medical Illustrator. they're the
individuals who create the diagrams (both with paper/elements and
digitally) because I easily have a strong pastime in both matters,
medical representation contains both, for this reason i have been
searching into that.
answers2: Unless you are really talented , do something besides art,
it is hard to make money in that field unless you are the best. Do a
year at a community college and see if you are better than everyone
else before you go to an expensive art school.
answers3: Oooh! Oooh! Come to Savannah College of Art and Design -
it's the biggest art school in the North America, located in Savannah
Georgia. It won Kaplan's best art school last year, as well.

why am i expected to act my age?

answers1: Ummm
answers2: Depends what is going on.
If you are an 13 year old and want to act like an 23 year old than
that's a problem. But if you are an 50 year old and like to go out and
party with younger people than I don't see nothing wrong....
answers3: i don't know. i just act.
answers4: I act all ages. It's not about being expected to act your
age, it's about being expected to act appropriately in different
situations.
answers5: I try not to. My step daughter is always telling me to act
my age. I have no idea what that means. But since she's 20 years
younger than I am, I find it amusing she thinks she knows how someone
my age is "suppose" to act. I laugh at her.
answers6: No I act like Alex B., always have and always will
answers7: Depends on your age. If you are 25 and act like you're 8,
that's one thing. But, if you're 50 and act 30, then that's entirely
another.
answers8: I act like a 14 year old with ADD. so no, cause I'm seventeen.
but its so lame how they say act your age then they go and tell you
you're as young as you feel.
answers9: I cannot act my age, I even forget how old I'm, ( I'm 35 ).
I stil feel and act like a twenty year old
answers10: Who expect you to act your age?
answers11: No, I am 49 and I do my best never to "act" that way. I am
raising a son on my own, so when it comes to showing him the way by
trying to lead by example on how to be a good and kind human being, I
guess I do act my age, but the rest of time, I do my best to have a
good time, and not restrict myself from experiencing things because I
am too old or young etc, except when safety is a concern. !!!!

response the olonists formed the Stamp Act Congress of 1765. This
Stamp Act congress sent a statement to Parliment protesting the new

Is Dream Theatre the best Progressive Metal Band?

answers1: No way! The best Progressive metal/ Power metal band is
Pyramaze by far!!!!
answers2: I'm not sure the best, but definitely up in the top 3.
answers3: Dream Theater is Progressive Metal all the way. Don't listen
to the guy above my answer. I like what he's saying and I was with him
but then he said Metallica was one of the first metal bands and i
laughed for hours and hours. and then I read further and I just
laughed more and more and more. His facts are wrong, hes wrong, and he
knows nothing. Metal did NOT start in the 80s it in fact started in
the 60s. He obviously forgot about the bands Deep Purple, Black
Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Nightmare to name a few. And the thing about the
waves, that's not true either, there's a bunch of waves all across
every metal genre. Heavy Metal branched of into several different
categories and those categorizes branched off into several more
categories. Also drugs have never been a problem cause they are
fantastic!!! But then again it does not matter what I say because
everyone will believe him cause he wrote out this long answer.
answers4: OPETH!!!!

i like dream theater..but for me opeth are the best progressive metal
band ever.
answers5: I Agree
answers6: I agree about Opeth. I also like Porcupine Tree... I'm not a
big prog metal fan, though.

answers8: I won't say "Dream Theatre" is the best but I love the
band........ ^_^ Their songs are so good..... >_<

d-(^_^)/ Thumbs up!!
answers9: I'm actually not a huge DT fan. Respect? yes, they are great
musicians, but the music just doesn't really do it for me. I prefer
things like Opeth, Gojira, Death, Mastodon, Scale the Summit, etc.
answers10: What Luke said, Opeth. Gonna see 'em November YEAH!

Are Shakespeare's plays poetry?

answers1: In Shakespeare's plays, you can find unrhymed iambic
pentameter (for the greatest part), prose (quite a lot) and some other
types of verse, sometimes with rhymes. The proportion varies in each
play.
answers2: The characters in Shakespeare's plays frequently speak in
blank verse, unrhymed iambic pentameter. That is the most common type
of poetry you'll find in his plays. Sometimes, his characters speak
in rhymed couplets or other types of rhyming verse. (For example,
characters in "Romeo and Juliet" speak several sonnets.) Although
iambic pentameter is Shakespeare's preferred meter, Puck in "A
Midsummer Night's Dream" is one character who sometimes speaks in
tetrameter (four beats to a line instead of five), and uses both
iambic and trochaic meter. Puck's famous "If we shadows have
offended" speech at the end of the play is one example. There are
occasional song and bits of poetry in some the plays that use other
varieties of meter and rhyme, and many characters speak in prose, with
no meter or rhyme.
answers3: It is metered, all of it iambic pentameter.
How to write poetry?

answers1: Poetry is thought and craft and idea, sometimes it seems
music and miracle. Poets have a many tools, rhyming, alliteration, and
repetition are just a few, and not always needed by the poem.

You must read as much as you can and as many different styles as you
can, classic and contemporary; free verse and structured forms. Two
good anthologies: Staying Alive, Real poems for Unreal Times edited by
Neil Astley and Garrison Keillor's Good Poems. Two books on writing
that will help guide you are Mary Oliver's A Poetry Handbook and The
Poetry Home Repair Kit from Ted Kooser.

There are many good sites on line where you can read poetry daily or
browse the archives:
Academy of Americans Poets
Poetry Daily
Verse Daily
The Writer's Almanac
Ploughshares
answers2: I used to be in 6th grade while I began writing poetry. For
a few intent, I used to be going by way of a difficult time and that
day my "pal" used to be simply being terrible... so I went residence
and wrote a poem. It used to be bizarre since my mother proposal I
used to be dyslexic till I used to be like eleven (I used to not ever
learn). So that used to be relatively my intro to literature. I've
been studying and writing like loopy ever when you consider that.
Lately I have not been writing. I feel it is since for the primary
time in a even as, I'm glad. And I simply do not know the way to put
in writing glad stuff. I think like I have got to be unhappy to put in
writing... which sucks. I wish I can begin up once more, however I do
not know.
answers3: No one really knows what makes a piece of writing poetry. It
could be in proper sentence but expressing one thing only in a poetic
way. Using descripitive words, or little words at all: differen't
formates and big words. Poetry doesn't need to ryhme inorder for it to
be write. Just express what you feel, and everything will be alright.

What can you do with a major in Philosophy?

answers1: You can't really do much with just a BA in Philosophy. You
could go to law school though. If not, you will need to go to grad
school and go further in your education. You could also become a
teacher but that would of course require about two years of teacher

doing).

Similarities and differences between philosophy, psychology and sociology?

answers1: It does but not as a science
answers2: Philosophy: why are we here, what does it all mean?
Psychology: why does the individual do what they do?
Sociology: why do groups of people do what they do?
And the science there of.
answers3: Psychology and sociology are sciences that evolved out of
philosophy. They are sciences, hence the OLOGY .
answers4: You are not at all mistaken. Difference of opinion will
always be there among philosophers, psychologists and sociologists.
Only when such wise people discuss, we will come to know the actual
REALITY. They discuss the differences in a friendly way in order to
help the general public. They want to give us the true essence of
philosophic theories.

It is good question presented in a new style.
answers5: Philosophy helps us understand the general and specific
relationship we are in reality whereas psychology deals with the
individual domain while sociology deals with the social domain of
activity within each of us. All three are pretty intermingled in the
most complex of ways. Years of study has helped us understand where
one begins and the other leaves off etc. etc..
answers6: Philosophy is original systematic thought in any subject
area. Science which uses the scientific method to reach new
conclusions is absolutely not philosophy. Philosophy that is not
historical philosophy is philosophy that develops new methods.
Sociology or psychology that extends standard methods is not
philosophy and philosoohy is to those sciences as jazz is to classical
music. One is improvised and the other is formal.

Form of Philosophy that starts with V?

answers1: Whether it is Hindu philosophy or any other philosophy -
peace is the moksha of human life. Hinduism if it is as you say is
based on the realisation of peace as the goal of human life- there can
be no two opinions about it. But the religion advocates so many
conditions and norms which are based on beliefs and which are- left to
the individuals to believe such conditions and norms or not. But
attaining peace of mind is the greatest bliss for a human. It is the
state of tranquility of mind when you are neither happy nor unhappy -
neither satisfied nor unsatisfied- neither worried nor free from
worries- and in short- the state when both the positive and negative
sides of human life remain equal and bring about an experience -
called PEACE-free from environmental influence . That remains only as
an imagination for 99.999999% of humans but there are people on earth
in such state – they are the babies found asleep- or those who are in
coma – apart from these exceptions- there may be a few here and there
quite contended with what they have- not worrying about anything that
happens around them. All others like us – should accept the reality-
peace is beyond our reach with our present day life style and
99.99999% feels that it is not worth wasting the present day life to
get peace of mind-because they have learnt to live without the peace
of mind.

The following branches are the main areas of study:

Metaphysics..... is the study of the nature of being and the world.
Traditional branches are cosmology and ontology.

Epistemology..... is concerned with the nature and scope of knowledge,
and whether knowledge is possible. Among its central concerns has been
the challenge posed by skepticism and the relationships between truth,
belief, and justification.

Ethics....., or "moral philosophy", is concerned with questions of how
persons ought to act or if such questions are answerable. The main
branches of ethics are meta-ethics, normative ethics, and applied
ethics. Meta-ethics concerns the nature of ethical thought, comparison
of various ethical systems, whether there are absolute ethical truths,
and how such truths could be known. Ethics is also associated with the
idea of morality. Plato's early dialogues include a search for
definitions of virtue.

Political philosophy... is the study of government and the
relationship of individuals and communities to the state. It includes
questions about justice, the good, law, property, and the rights and
obligations of the citizen.

Aesthetics... deals with beauty, art, enjoyment, sensory-emotional
values, perception, and matters of taste and sentiment.

Logic... is the study of valid argument forms. Beginning in the late
19th century, mathematicians such as Frege focused on a mathematical
treatment of logic, and today the subject of logic has two broad
divisions: mathematical logic (formal symbolic logic) and what is now
called philosophical logic.

Philosophy of mind... deals with the nature of the mind and its
relationship to the body, and is typified by disputes between dualism
and materialism. In recent years there has been increasing similarity
between this branch of philosophy and cognitive science.

Philosophy of language... is inquiry into the nature, origins, and
usage of language.

Philosophy of religion... is a branch of philosophy that asks
questions about religion.
